Trading Psychology

Control emotions and trade with discipline.

Trading Psychology

Psychology accounts for 80% of trading success. You can have the best strategy in the world – if you don't control your emotions, you will lose money in the long run.

The biggest psychological mistakes

1. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

The fear of missing out on an opportunity causes traders to rush into trades – without waiting for their setup. The result: Bad entries and unnecessary losses.

Solution: Stick strictly to your trading plan. If you missed a trade, wait for the next opportunity. The market always offers new chances.

2. Revenge Trading

After a loss, many traders try to win the lost money back immediately. They increase position size or deviate from their strategy. This often leads to even bigger losses.

Solution: After 2-3 consecutive losses: Turn off your PC, go for a walk. Return the next day.

3. Overtrading

Too many trades at once or trading too frequently. Quality beats quantity! The best traders often make only 2-5 trades per week.

Solution: Set yourself a maximum number of trades per day/week. Keep a trading journal to recognize overtrading.

4. Loss Aversion

The fear of losses causes profits to be taken too early and losses to run too long. Psychologically, losses hurt 2x more than gains please.

Solution: Define Take Profit and Stop Loss BEFORE the trade and stick to it.

5. Confirmation Bias

Traders search only for information that confirms their existing opinion and ignore contradictory signals.

Solution: Actively search for reasons why your trade could fail. Be your own critic.

Mindset fundamentals

  • Accept losses – Losses are part of the game. No trader has a 100% win rate
  • Think in probabilities – Every single trade can win or lose. Your edge shows itself only over many trades
  • Process over result – Focus on the quality of your decisions, not the result of individual trades
  • Patience – The best trades come to you, not you to them
  • Discipline – Rules without discipline are useless

Keep a trading journal

A trading journal is the most important tool to improve your performance:

  • Screenshot of the chart at entry and exit
  • Setup description and reasoning
  • Emotional state during the trade
  • What did you do well? What can you improve?
  • Weekly and monthly reviews

Mental routines

  • Pre-market routine – Market analysis, mark key levels, plan for the day
  • Breaks – Take a moment to breathe after each trade
  • Post-market review – What went well? What didn't? Update your journal
  • Physical health – Exercise, sleep and healthy eating improve your trading
